Pat Metheny - Ornette Coleman: Song X

( Naar de Nederlandse vertaling.)

A few days ago I discussed the Keith Jarrett LP The Köln Concert - a great album that belongs to the treasures in jazz, but needs several replays before it shows its value. Music that asks some more attention than the music played at pop radio stations nowadays. The CD Song X by Pat Metheny and Ornette Coleman is another example of a record you can't fully understand after one spin in your CD player. Let's say it in another way: it's a bottle of wine that needs time to become to taste. To be honest - I bought this album at a record sale, without any preparations or research. The name of Ornette Coleman had hit the headlines as he had suffered a relapse at stage due to heat and exhaustion and Pat Metheny is one of those great guitar players I have but few CDs in my collection. The cover, however, was well designed and inspiring; the recordings inside were not recent, but made in 1985 - twenty years ago. This is not one of those smooth Pat Metheny's guitar records to play before the fireplace with candles and a good glass of wine. In 1985 Pat Metheny had left the ECM label and he wanted to make an album with a man whose music he adored since he was eleven years old: Ornette Coleman. Ornette, born in 1930, plays alto saxophone and surprised friend and foe with the 1960 album Free Jazz he made with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell. This album became a landmark in jazz, not only that a new style, the free jazz was born, but for a lot of jazz fans also a milestone to indicate that jazz had passed away. I like jazz up to Ornete Coleman they would say. Pat Metheny loved to make an album with Ornette Coleman and so he did: Song X with the old master on the alto saxophone ( and violin on Mob Job ), Charlie Haden on bass, Jack DeJohnette and Ornette's son Denardo Coleman on percussion. The original 1985 release contained eight tunes. In 2005 Pat Metheny reissued this album with 6 extra cuts that were not on the original one.
I can imagine that Pat Metheny fans, who have bought this album to lounge and relax, will dislike this album at first; some tunes like Song X and Endangered Species are really furious, boiling affairs that can leave even the most attentive listener exhausted, I read in a review and I can agree fully with it - no music to play when you want to introduce your fiancée to jazz, I guess. But there is a lot of great music on this album, but, as I pointed before, it needs time to become tasty. It is difficult using words to convey the music of Ornette Coleman, so the best suggesstion is to just listen. The reissue of the year - so far, a review used as its heading; another reads: A must-own - Plug in.

I found some fragments where you can listen to Ornette Coleman as he played in 1979 and enjoy Pat Metheny in a more recent concert.

Nederlands ( To the English translation )
